There are three basic criteria: good, fouled, and overheated. The firing end appearance also depends on the spark plug tip temperature.

The border-line between the fouling and optimum operating regions ( 450 degrees C ) is called the spark plug self-cleaning temperature. This temperature is point that accumulated carbon is burnt off.

HOT TYPE- has a larger surface exposed to the combustion gases. It dissipates heat slowly. It's firing end heats up quickly.

COLD TYPE- has a smaller surface exposed to the combustion gasses. It dissipates heats quickly. It's firing end does not heat up quickly.
