Why Some Make It & Some Never Will . . .

Look around any track in America, walk through the pits, check out the drivers, some are seasoned,  some are just getting started on the road to NASCAR® and both have a long road ahead of them, and while some drivers may fall to the way side giving up long before they ever got started.

Because racing is not as easy as it appears, for some it appears to come easily, while others work a life time to reach their goals.

You have to ask yourself, what draws certain ones to float to the top like fresh cream, while others are lucky to make it to Saturday Night race event, and yet they are just as happy? When is enough, enough for a true racer? The answer is Never!

A real race driver is never truly satisfied with their performance levels, regardless of the number of Championship titles they may earn.

Real racers never give up, always seeking ways to improve, not just themselves, but everything they work with, from upgrading their tools, their work shops, to vehicles, and parts, because it's in their hearts, and no one can take that from them.

While some drivers maybe satisfied with having fun on any given race night, the dedicated racer, sacrifices', works at many different jobs, yet still finds the time, the energy, and gains the attention of the real race fans.

Race fans come in a variety of ages, they maybe of different backgrounds, nationalities, neighborhoods, you name it, yet they all have one thing in common, and that is they love to watch talented drivers have the opportunity to climb the ranks. When their chosen driver finally gets there, they remain true blue, and never stray from their support, even if it only means watching them on the television, and no longer being able to attend the races themselves.

Drivers often meet thousands of people while on tour, and autograph thousands of items for their race fans, but the fact remains without those fans, the drivers desire may fade away, and his heart would stop, for there would no longer be a reason for their dedication, to win, because drivers don't always want to win for themselves, but for their fans & followers, that is what racing is truly about!

So the next time you see a racer, giving it his or her all, win or loose, walk up to them & shake their hand, ask for their autograph, let them know how much you enjoyed the race! Then watch the smile as it grows on their face, knowing that someone really cares, cares enough to support a mutual passion that all racers & race Fans share & share alike...

If you love racing, go to your local race track & pick out a driver for the 2006 season, pledge yourself to attend every race, and be there for that driver, because every driver needs more people like you, to add meaning to their racing life. Remember its not easy to go out and risk your life, for the mere pleasure of others, yet real race drivers do, without ever thinking twice, because when they race, they are racing for their Fans!

Drivers, Fast or Furious? Race Fans, Definitely Curious. . .

The fast & friendly folks at Charlotte County Speedway, put on an exciting show this Saturday evening, with something new and unique. Having heard of the latest called drifting, the drivers set out to wow the crowds. As the "Drifter's" began their show, I had no idea what to expect, listening from the pits, had even less than a clue, what those fans in the stands would think either.

It began with announcing the drivers of the cars, (yes, and not race cars) but cars like anyone would drive back and forth to work in, street cars on the racetrack? Had they lost their minds? All that could be heard was the 'squealing' of tires, as I walked closer towards the backside of the track to take a glimpse, in my racer's mind I anticipated to hear smash, crash, banging of crushing metal, and I expected to see race cars, up against the wall, the noise was nothing compared to the smell of the burning rubber as it hit my senses, watching in amazement, as these drivers appeared to be racing each other, just not in the same manner real racer's are accustomed to.

It appeared the purpose of this display, much like we see in the movies, was to slide thru the turns, (they refer to it as drifting) it was pretty amazing stuff, as they would shoot down the back stretch, where cones were placed for them to attempt to continue their drift, while weaving in and out thru the cones, then into turn three and four, burning the tires off of the cars, which at one given point, sparks flew from one of the cars entering the back stretch, while another looked as if; he couldn't catch it, he was coming for the wall, and we were prepared to run for our lives!

On the front side, near the end of their performance, there was the donut challenge, again the challenge was to burn rubber, no doubt sending the crowd into tears, tears of joy that is, the fans went wild over the display, I personally thought, (in my mind) it was odd compared to the oval racing we've grown so accustomed to at most race tracks, apparently I wasn't the only one with that thought, as a racer nearby, commented under his breath, 'okay, I've seen enough, guess I'll just have to get used to it', as he turned away and walked towards his pit.

Any change to die-hard oval race fans, isn't always easy, but if this new craze does nothing more than keep drivers off the streets and on the track, frolicking in a controlled environment, then I think it's a good thing. Drag racing on isolated back roads was, and may still be a major problem in some areas, and just as it took time for those drivers to get off the streets and get on the tracks, it has been accepted. I believe this too, will come to being accepted as a unique way for motor-sports enthusiasts to enjoy their newfound game, and for fans to watch something different, in between the regular racing events on a Saturday night.

Race Fans may love the smell of methanol fuel, and accept an occasional rubber squeal, or burn out, but the smoke these guys put out, well, again, we race fans will just need time, to get hooked on a new thing.

It is 'Hot' on the west coast, and has managed to spread that 'Heat' to the south-east, so next time you hear 'Drifters' are coming to your town, or to a racetrack near you, it's Okay to take the kids to watch, point your finger at them and yell at the top of their lungs, as these fans did for the count down to the chant of 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, "GO" because you may be surprised, as the drivers at some point stuck their arms out the windows, out the roof tops, one even had his door opened while he did donuts!

Man! Race car drivers, may be jealous of these guys, before it's over, as they can barely get a hand out to wave a faster car pass them on certain nights. Then again, I wondered, are these guys even wearing their seatbelts? I didn't see driving gloves, helmets, no safety gear, I wondered if they even had a fire extinguisher on board, perhaps food for thought, for the near future.

But time will tell, whether this craze will make it or break it... with the fans, meanwhile, I'll be watching them closely, give them a chance to prove that their not 100% nuts, make that 50%, because myself, I need my tires to get the race car to the track, the tires on the race car, yeah, we may use them up in one performance too, but I don't have to get home on those...
